Electrification and Solar Panels
Currently, Baja Project supports ongoing electrification efforts within the community by supplying portable, subsidized solar panels. Baja Project sources both handheld solar lamps, primarily used for room lighting within community homes, and larger solar panels for larger appliances from local solar non-profit organizations in Southern California. The provision of solar panels seeks to address ongoing issues related to electricity within community that leaves many households without consistent, reliable power.
While the community does contain a central, gasoline-powered grid, collective action issues have left it shut off for the past few years. Due to the isolation of the community any solutions with alternative delivery of electricity by the central government are infeasible so solar remains the most palatable option. Besides the delivery of solar products, Baja Project educates local community members about proper solar use and maintenance to further support electrification efforts.
