Baja Project catalyzes change in El Barril, Baja California, Mexico to empower its residents and improve its education, health, infrastructure and quality of life. Our guiding principles are sustainable development, cultural respect, partnership and creativity. Baja Project is graduate student-managed and privately funded.
What is Sustainable Development?
Sustainable development implies a way of supporting the current needs of a community while balancing social, economic and environmental dynamics for future generations. By allowing local residents to assess their needs, capabilities and resources, and by providing expertise, management, and auxiliary materials, we help the community maintain self-sufficiency after our involvement. The Baja Project team works with community leaders, offers viable solutions, and maintains a remote role in management and consultation. With the gracious help of San Diego businessman and philanthropist James Jameson, El Barril has received supplies for clean drinking water and lighting projects and has given the Baja Project team the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the people of El Barril.
The next trip to The next trip to El Barril is scheduled for April 2015 and will be the last for the current second year consultants, Jake, Leila, Elena and Liz. The trip will include researching the feasibility of a new windmill to supplement the existing well system, the health clinic’s grand opening, meeting with the Fishing Co-Operative, meeting with the Aquaculture group to discuss future cultivation plans, and providing further solar cells for community members.
